MOSCOW, Idaho - The 2006 season continued to be rough for the University of Idaho women's soccer team after the Vandals suffered their eighth shutout in a 2-0 loss to Washington State.
The Cougars (5-2-1) scored two goals in the first 16 minutes that proved to be enough to keep Idaho (0-9-0) winless on the season. After the second goal the two teams locked into a defensive struggle as the game only saw a combined 15 shots.
"The goals we gave up came on balls where we failed to clear and they converted, typical goals for us this season," Idaho coach Pete Showler said. "After the second score we made sweeping changes and the players who came in had the hearts of lions. They worked hard, they were scrappy, and they were winning balls. It was a much better performance than I have seen most of the season and I am much happier. A 90-minute performance of that caliber could have produced a positive result. Even though we aren't happy with a 2-0 loss, the players can walk away from this game with their heads held high."
Washington State struck early with a goal in the fifth minute and the insurance score came 10 minutes later in the 15th minute. WSU held a 10-5 advantage in shots and managed eight corner kicks to Idaho's one. Of the 15 shots, eight were on goal.
The Vandals return home for their next game to take on Gonzaga Friday (Sept. 22) at 3 p.m. The weekend will conclude with Idaho on the road at Oregon Sunday (Sept. 24) with the game starting at 1 p.m.
