MOSCOW, Idaho ? The University of Idaho's swimming team defeated Boise State University, 170-49, behind JoJo Miller's two first-place finishes.
Jager compared the rivalry between that of BSU and UI to that of his alma mater, UCLA, and its rival USC.
“When we swam USC we did not back off ? that is just the way it is,” Jager said.” We had to finish all the way to the end ...I wanted to make sure our people did not swim off of them and go slow. Hopefully what you saw tonight is our kids going hard because that is what sports are all about.”
In each event of the night, the Vandals finished with at least the top three spots.
Miller finished with a time of 25.36 in the 50-yard freestyle, almost two seconds ahead of her nearest Boise State opponent. Katie Kolva and Katherine Kubancik placed second and third in the event.
In Miller's final swim, the 100-yard fly, she finished with a time of 1:00.23, followed closely by Paige Lee and Cortnee Hanson.
UI swimming coach Tom Jager said he was impressed with the effort he saw from Justine Scaccia, who finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.92.
“Justine had a great night,” Jager said. “It is only her second meet as a Vandal because she was ineligible until January. She is coming around and looking better every day. We are really excited about her for the WAC.”
Scaccia also swam a 56.83 in the 100-yard freestyle for a second-place finish.
The Vandals travel to Washington State University Saturday. Play begins at 11 a.m.
