MOSCOW ? The Idaho women's soccer team surrendered a 2-1 decision to the Eastern Washington Eagles in the team's final non-conference match of the season Sunday at Guy Wicks Field to slip to 4-7 on the season.
For the second week in a row, the Vandals came out of the blocks slow and fell behind early, this time allowing a goal just 6:42 into the game. Idaho has now lost six of its last seven after starting the season 3-1.
“We were second-best everywhere and at this level you can't expect to be second to the ball and win games and that's the long and short of it,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. “They wanted the ball more than we did today and it showed.”
The first half was nothing pretty for Idaho, as the team was outshot 13-3 and didn't have a single shot on goal. Goalkeeper Anna Sandman got the start and allowed one goal with four saves in the first half. Michelle Jordan covered the Vandal goal in the second half, tallying a pair of saves and allowing a goal.
The Vandals came alive late in the second, but only after EWU had tacked on a second goal to put Idaho in a 2-0 hole at the 81:14 mark. Aimee Goss converted a penalty kick to bring Idaho within one with just over a minute to play, but it wasn't enough.
Idaho finished the game with 10 shots and four on goal, while EWU took 19 shots with eight on goal. The Vandals had possession in the EWU zone for a good portion of the second half, but couldn't create enough scoring chances in front of the goal.
“We've got to get back to what we were doing, and that's playing good soccer, taking control of the ball and dictating the play,” Showler said.
Next up for the Vandals is Utah State, as the team opens WAC play at home next Friday at 3 p.m. at Guy Wicks Field. The Aggies enter the matchup with a 4-8 record, having lost four of their last five. The Vandals will also be at Louisiana Tech on Sunday. The Lady Techsters are 2-8 on the season.
