Idaho can't handle #15 Hawai`i

HONOLULU, Hawai`i ? The University of Idaho volleyball team had trouble handling No. 15 Hawai`i in a 3-0 loss to open Western Athletic Conference play.

The Vandals (3-7, 0-1) struggled through the first two games, falling 30-18 and 30-13, but put together a better effort in the 30-27 final game. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in WAC play.

Hawai`i is a good team and they played well. We made too many errors and didn't come ready to play. That is a lack of maturity on our part. We need to make sure we are playing consistent instead of bouncing around so much like we have been,” Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said.

Idaho's 37 kills were its second-lowest of the season and it gave up 17 points on return and service errors. Haley Larsen, who entered the game with the third-highest kills-per-game average in the NCAA at 5.52, was held to just eight kills in the match to lead the Vandals.

“This game is done and now our focus needs to be on next week. We need to get in the gym Monday and get better while also preparing for our next opponent,” Buchanan said.

The Vandals return home to face Gonzaga Tuesday at 7 p.m.
