BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? University of Idaho sophomore Jennifer Eugenio scored a goal in the 89th minute to send the Idaho women's soccer team into overtime against Cal State Bakersfield, but the Vandals fell to the Roadrunners in the 102nd minute by a score of 2-1.
“It was a game of two halves,” Idaho head coach Peter Showler said. “In the first half, we were second to every ball and we played a little rushed. Then in the second half, we were the dominant team?we won every tackle and every header.
“After the first 45, the girls stepped up and took control. They've set the standard, now the just have to do it at the first whistle.”
The Vandal women managed just one shot in the first half and finished with seven total in the game, including four on goal. Bakersfield took 16 total shots, the Idaho defense held them to just six shots on goal.
Eugenio scored her first career goal with just 51 seconds remaining in the match to tie it up, then senior Nicole McAllister appeared to have completed the comeback in the first overtime with a solid strike, but it bounced off the cross bar and out.
“Mac hit a cheeky little chip and it went off the bar, then hit the line and unfortunately bounced out,” Showler said.
Bakersfield's Veronica Ramos knocked in the game-winner in the second minute of the second overtime period to end the game.
Four true freshmen earned starting spots for the Vandals, as Liz Boyden played the whole game at goalkeeper with four saves and two goals allowed in 102 minutes and Danielle Raczykowski, Shelby Moriguchi and Danielle Hayward also earned starting slots.
With the loss, Idaho slips to 0-1 on the season. The team's all-time record in season openers is now 3-7-1. Friday's game was the third time the team has taken a season opener to overtime.
While he said he was disappointed in the loss, Showler said that it was a good experience and that he was proud with how the team performed.
“Everyone can come out with their heads held high knowing that they left everything on the field tonight and I can ask no more than that,” Showler said. “They know now what they can do with grit and determination and now they've just go to do it for the full 90 (minutes).”
