LEWISTON, Idaho ? The University of Idaho Men's Tennis Team cruised to victories over Lewis and Clark State College (LCSC) and Whitman College on Saturday.
The Vandals put away LCSC, ranked No. 17 NAIA, 6-1 in the first match of their doubleheader. Idaho took all three doubles matches and Alan Shin and Alex Joitoiu recorded wins in their Idaho debuts in singles and doubles.
Idaho concluded the doubleheader with a 7-0 win over Whitman College, ranked No. 20 NCAA Division III. Joitoiu and Shin notched singles and doubles victory in the match to finish the weekend unbeaten. Veteran Idaho pair Rob Chalkely and Stanislav Glukhov also concluded the weekend 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.
“It is good to get two wins on the board to start the year,” University of Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “Whitman and LCSC are both nationally ranked men's programs in their divisions and are talented well coached teams, so our guys are pushed and have a chance to get the early season nerves out.”
Men's tennis will hit the road this weekend for a trio of games in Oregon. It will be the first time Idaho faced NCAA Division I competition this season.
“Looking towards this weekend we have three very tough D-I opponents in a row with Oregon, Samford and UC Davis," Beaman said.
