CHENEY, Wash. - The University of Idaho volleyball team fell in a four-set loss to Eastern Washington in non-conference action Wednesday.
Idaho (5-9) fell behind 2-0 before rebounding to take set three. After rallying to tie the score at 20-20 late in the fourth set, the Eagles (9-5) scored four-straight points and held on to take the match. Set scores were 18-25, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-22.
Sarah Conwell led the Vandal offense with 15 kills and also added 11 digs and four blocks. Kelsey Taylor finished with 10 kills and a .304 hitting percentage and Meredith Rice totaled 16 digs. Anna McKinney hit .308 for the match and tallied seven blocks.
As a team, Idaho hit .135 compared to .209 for Eastern Washington. The Vandals held a 13-10 advantage in blocks, but the Eagles took a 74-58 margin for digs.
In set one, Idaho led 12-9 before a 13-1 Eastern Washington run pushed the score to 22-13 on the way to a 25-18 set victory for the Eagles. Neither team led by more than two points in set two until a 10-1 Eagle run turned Idaho's 16-15 lead into a 25-17 loss. After trailing 14-10 in set three, the Vandals rebounded to take their first lead at 19-18 and continued on for a 25-21 victory. Idaho trailed more the majority of set four but fought back to tie the score at 20-20. EWU scored the next four points and went on to win 25-22 and take the match 3-1.
Idaho will play its home opener Saturday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m. The Vandals will return to Western Athletic Conference action vs. Fresno State at Memorial Gym.
