Disappointing End To Fantastic Season For Vandal Women

HONOLULU, Hawaii ? It was déjà vu for the University of Idaho women's tennis team at the WAC tournament. It was the second year in a row nationally ranked Nevada knocked the Vandals out of the tournament in the first round.

“I thought we competed better against Nevada today than we did when we played them earlier in the season.” Idaho women's tennis head coach Tyler Neill said. “We didn't necessarily play our best, but I feel like we gave 100% effort.”

Idaho fell to Nevada 4-0 on Thursday; The Vandals also lost 4-0 to Nevada in the conference tournament last season. Earlier in the season, Idaho could not stop Nevada losing 7-0 in conference play.

“Nevada is a very good team and they demonstrated their strength at the top of their lineup,” Neill said. “It's a disappointing way to end a good season.”

The Vandal women fought hard in doubles but could not grab a match from Nevada. In singles, Alexandra Ulesanu was leading in the No.5 position but the match was not finished after Nevada reached four points.

“I thought we competed very well at the lower positions,” Neill said. “Alex played very well today and she was close to winning her match when the overall match ended.”

Idaho ends the season with 20-wins, a school record and a chance to build on the success of this season. There are currently no seniors on the women's tennis team.

“We had a very good season this year, but I still feel we can improve on what we accomplished this year,” Neill said. “The WAC is the best it has ever been in tennis.  One of our goals for next season is to climb our way toward the top of the WAC.”
