FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Nicole Schuh turned in a convincing performance to win the 100-meter breaststroke then churned to a swift 2:41.01 to win the 200-meter race by more than six seconds as the Idaho Vandals took on Northern Arizona Saturday afternoon at Flagstaff.
"It went well," coach Tom Jager said as the Vandals wrapped up their traditional rigorous winter conditioning at NAU. "The kids swam pretty good. ... It's been a good two weeks. We saw some great races and they trained great."
The couldn't, however, keep pace with the Lumberjacks, who won 173-127 in the non-conference event.
That's not to say Jager didn't have kudos for his team. In addition to Schuh's double, Katie Hendricks won the 50 and 100 freestyle races and Alyson O'Brien won the 400 free for the second meet in a row after winning last Saturday at New Mexico State.
Jager also likes the improvement he's seeing in the young diving team. Amanda Morrow had a personal best in the 3-meter event and was on track to do so in the one-meter event before a sub-par final dive.
If there was a disappointment, it was in the 200 free relay losing, literally, by a touch. NAU clocked in 1:48.02 with the Vandals in 1:48.23.
"We were a little disappointed in the sprint relay," Jager said. "We maybe have some room for improvement there."
The Vandals are off until they travel to Boise State Jan. 23. Their next home meet is Jan. 30 vs. Oregon State.
