MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho women's tennis team will be back in action to kick off its fall schedule starting Sept. 4 at the Lyle Pearson Labor Day Tournament in Sun Valley, Idaho. Head coach Tyler Neill announced the schedule, which includes six fall tournaments to prepare the team for a 22-match spring season.
"For the last couple years we haven't had many new players, but now all of the sudden we have four new players and we lost four starters from last year," Neill said. "So with the fall schedule it's nice to see how they stack up against some of the competition, and it's important because it helps us figure out doubles pairings."
In addition to Labor Day weekend, the Vandals will host the UTSA Campus Showdown on Sept. 12, play at the Cougar Classic in Pullman on Sept. 24-26, and split up to compete in the Boise State Fall Invitational and the EWU/Gonzaga Invitational on Oct. 1-3. The ITA Regional Championships is in Las Vegas on Oct. 13-17.
The spring schedule begins Jan. 22 with a pair of matches in Lewiston against Seattle University and Lewis-Clark State College. Idaho will also face regional opponents Washington State, Portland, Eastern Washington, Montana and Gonzaga, and play a seven-match Western Athletic Conference schedule.
"Just like always we have some of the familiar regional teams that we always play," Neill said. "I think we always need play some of those familiar teams because it's interesting to see year-to-year how we stack up to them."
The Vandals will also take trips to Texas, Hawaii and California for non-conference matches against UT-Pan America, UTEP, Alabama-Birmingham, Hawaii-Hilo, Cal State Fullerton and UC-Riverside.
"With the trip to Texas and the trip to California we get to play some schools that we haven't ever played, or at least haven't played in the last five years. It's always nice to go up against some other schools that you don't always see outside of conference play."
The WAC Championships will be April 29-May 1 in Boise.
