Flockhart's late goal lifts soccer

SPOKANE, Wash. - It had been a complete deadlock for 76 minutes, but sophomore Jill Flockhart's tap-in goal gave the University of Idaho all it needed in a 1-0 win over Eastern Washington on Tuesday night at Joe Albi Stadium.

The Vandals saw a first-half shot bounce off the crossbar and had plenty of good scoring looks before sophomore Erica Hart snuck a cross between a pair of defenders and found Flockhart's foot for the game-winner at 76:06.

The score came just minutes after Hart had a goal disallowed for an offsides call.

"Erica came right back and put in a great ball to Jill," Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. "That capped a great second half for Jill, because I thought she played really well, too."

Junior Liz Boyden made two saves and survived a big collision late in the match to earn her second shutout in as many matches.

The win bumps Idaho's record to 7-2-0 on the year and gives the Vandals their school-record sixth-straight victory. Eastern Washington slips to 0-7-1 with the loss.

"They battle hard, they get bodies across well, they're strong and they're direct," Showler said of the Eagles. "We knew what they were going to do and we dealt with it, but they're a better side than their record shows."

Idaho out-shot EWU by a 17-9 overall margin and had a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. EWU was whistled for 10 fouls, compared to four for the Vandals. EWU keeper Jamie Walker played all 90 minutes and made nine saves.

"We showed that we can figure things out and play our way and it was a very effective second half - we believed we could do it, then we did it," Showler said. "We got caught up in their style of play in the first half, and on that surface, it didn't suit us at all."

The goal was Flockhart's first of the year and the fifth of her career - her fourth game-winner. Hart's assist was her second of this season.

Idaho will take its win streak to Seattle this weekend to face Seattle University (Friday, 1 p.m.) and Cal State Bakersfield (Sunday, 11 a.m.) at the Redhawk Invitational.
