PORTLAND, ORE – After a hard fought physical battle the University of Idaho women's soccer team dropped their final Big Sky Conference match to Portland State, 1-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Vandals conclude conference play with a 4-13-2 season record and a 4-3-2 record in league play and finish the conference season with 14 points.
“I give credit to Portland State, they are a quality team and did a great job finishing their chances today,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “But I am still very proud of our player's toughness and the fact that they never quit today. The Big Sky Standings are still up in the air and we will hope for the best from other results to see if we can get into the tournament.”
The Vandals trailed Portland State 1-0 after a Viking goal by Cori Bianchini in the fourth minute. Bianchini got the rebound off her own blocked shot and knocked the second ball into the goal. PSU held a 1-0 lead going into half.
At half, both teams had attempted five shots, with three on goal.
Portland State doubled their lead 14 minutes into the second half with a goal by Katie Forsee. Vandal Keeper Torell Stewart made a save on a ball by Bianchini, but the ball was deflected and dropped onto the foot of Forsee who scored from 10-yards out.
PSU pushed the score to 3-0 in the 63rd minute when Angela Haluska took advantage of a missed clearance in the box. Tamia Hassan touched the ball to Haluska who netted the ball.
In the 85th minute, the Vandals cut their deficit by one after freshman Olivia Baggerly fired the ball from 35-yards out, hitting the post and crossbar, before the ball landed in the back of the net to give Idaho its lone score of the afternoon.
Overall, Portland State led the Vandals in shots 14-7, and held an edge in shots on goal 10-4. Freshman Josilyn Daggs led the Vandals totaling three shots, with one on goal, while Stewart registered seven saves over the match.
“It's been a tough run of games these last couple weeks, but we showed good character to keep giving our best every time we stepped out,” Pittman said. “We will continue focusing on what is important to building a championship culture here at Idaho and prepare for Illinois State just like any other opponent.”
Although the Vandals are done with Big Sky Conference action, they still have one match remaining in their season. Idaho will travel to Normal, Ill., to faceoff against Illinois State Thursday at 5 p.m. PT.
