MOSCOW, Idaho – Sophomore Kavita Battan scored her second-straight game winning goal, leading the University of Idaho women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of North Dakota on Sunday.
“I definitely think getting that early goal put North Dakota on their heels and got our spirits up and we were ready to go,” Battan said. “We just kept pushing and pushing, we might not have gotten another goal but we had the opportunities and we were confident in ourselves to keep going.”
Battan scored the game-winner in the 21st minute after sophomore keeper Torell Stewart punted the ball connecting with Battan, who found an opening on the weak side and made a dash for the goal firing the ball from 10 yards out.
The Vandal defense limited UND (1-6-1, 0-1) to three shots in the first half, while Idaho had 11 going into half time.
“We gained a lot of confidence from Friday in the sense that we were able to execute our game plan,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “Sundays are always tough, it is difficult because you have to play another game within 48 hours, but our kids found a way to come out and grind it out.”
The Vandals outshot North Dakota 19-8, putting seven on goal. Stewart registered three saves over the match.
“I think this win, more than anything proves to the team that what we have been doing the past nine weeks is paying off,” Pittman stated. “We had a difficult non-conference schedule that helped to prepare us for Big Sky play. The team believes in our game play, they trust themselves and the coaching staff and this weekend they went out and executed it on both days.”
Idaho ends its two game stint at home, with a 2-0 record in conference play. The Vandals are back on the pitch Friday at 3 p.m. PT at Southern Utah. Idaho returns home Sunday to faceoff against Northern Arizona at 1 p.m.
