MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho soccer team has added 10 new faces to the program as part of the signing class that will begin their careers at Idaho in the fall of 2015, head coach Derek Pittman announced on Wednesday.
Clara Gomez (Orange, Calif.), Ashley Anaya-Webb (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Megan Goo (Kaneohe, Hawaii), Kayla Watanabe (Honolulu, Hawaii), Reed Richardson (Portland, Ore.), Summer 'Pikake' Kaneshiro (Makakilo Hawaii), Amanda Poertner (Fullerton, Calif.), Kelly Dopke (Arcadia, Calif.), Claire Johnson (Snoqualmie, Wash.) and Kayleigh Frederick (Temecula, Calif.) make up the Vandals 2015 signing class.
This new class of Vandals bolsters the roster in every position including four forwards, three defenders, two midfielders, and one goalkeeper.
The incoming class will join Junior College transfer, Clara Gomez, who began taking classes at Idaho in January.
“Over the last 12 months, one of the top priorities for our staff has been to put together the best recruiting class possible for 2015. Josh, Laura and I have worked tirelessly to do just that, so with great enthusiasm today we are proud to announce this group of young ladies that have chosen to attend the University of Idaho and be part of a bright future within the Vandals Soccer program,” Pittman said.
“These ten players are as successful in the classroom as they are on the field and will add athleticism, speed, technical skill and goal scoring ability to a strong core of players that will be returning for next fall. They embody what it means to be a Vandal and know that our fans will enjoy watching them for years to come. In 2014, the team took several positive steps forward in proving that we can compete with the top teams in the Big Sky Conference. Our staff and returners are working hard to make sure we build off of that momentum and cement ourselves even more as a top team in our conference.”

Coach Pittman: “Simply put, Ashley is a proven goal scorer! She is quick, creative on the ball and has a tremendous nose for the goal. She has proven that she can play at the highest level, while at Long Beach State, as well as leading her team with 42 goals in 24 games on their way to a CCCAA State Championship. As an NSCAA Junior College All-American, Ashley has the ability to break down opposing defenses with her speed and tactical awareness, which will be a great addition to our attack as we work to score more goals in 2015.”

Coach Pittman: “Claire is one of the first recruits we committed for 2015 and we remain very excited about her potential as an outside back for the Vandals. She has the speed, quickness and athleticism to be a quality one v. one defender at this level plus the ability to attack out of the back, serving dangerous crosses into the penalty area. She has experienced the game at the highest level for her Crossfire ECNL team and had a tough coach in Justi Baumgardt who taught her to play the game the right way. She is a true Vandal!”

Coach Pittman: “Clara showed her excitement and commitment to being a Vandal by arriving in Moscow over winter break and starting classes immediately as a mid-year transfer. Clara is a composed and simple player that does a lot of little things well that some may not notice in a game. As a team captain she led Cerritos JC in back to back Championships. She is an accurate passer of the ball, rarely giving the ball over in possession as well as having a fantastic work ethic off the ball. We are excited that she will provide our team with depth and toughness in the midfield.”

Coach Pittman: “Megan is quality soccer player with a good IQ for the game. She can play as either a central midfielder or a forward higher up the field. Megan has good awareness of space and quality technical skills; her 1st touch ability to play short & long passes, as well as the ability to score in and around the penalty area. One quality that makes Megan a special player is her control and composure on the ball, attributes important for a creative playmaker that will influence our attack from various spots on the field.”

Coach Pittman: “As a staff we can't wait to coach Kayla and see what she can do as a Vandal. She plays with a reckless abandon and passion that can be hard to find in players these days. As a forward, she has speed, explosiveness and a willingness to do whatever it takes to score goals. She can shoot from anywhere inside 30 yards and is not afraid to sell out to get her head on any cross in the 18yd box. Kayla also has the experience and versatility to play as an outside defender if needed, and will be a fantastic Vandal!”

Coach Pittman: “Overall our roster needs more athletes that can stretch opponents on the attack and Reed will give us that in the flank areas. Her club, Crossfire Oregon ECNL, and their staff have a proven record of developing top-level players that go on to play in college. Reed is a great athlete and attacks defenders with pace on the flank. This speed creates crossing opportunities for her teammates or simply creating shots for herself. Reed will help add another attacking threat on our roster for next season.”

Coach Pittman: “We anticipate that Kayleigh will add depth and challenge for playing time in our biggest area of need, outside back. She is a tremendous 1v1 defender who is not afraid to be physical and tough in tackles when necessary. Kayleigh is a great athlete with good size and strength, which will help us in the air and on set plays both defensively and offensively. Her relentless attitude, courage and ability to attack up and down the flank will help provide an element of stability to the back line.”

Coach Pittman: “One of our biggest needs in this class was defenders to bolster our back line and Kelly is going to fit right in. She is a tremendous athlete with good size, strength, 1v1 defending ability and as well as a big presence in the air when needed. She is calm and composed when organizing her fellow defenders, which will help provide leadership in the back. Kelly also has the ability to distribute the ball very well and begin our attack with a variety of passes, short or long. Our staff feels she has the tools to be a top center back in the Big Sky.”

Her communication and ability to organize the players in front of her is key to her strong presence in the goal. She also has good footwork and explosive ability when diving for shots or simply coming out to claim crosses. Amanda distributes the ball well from her hands and feet, a valuable asset we can use when starting our attack. There will be an open competition in goal for 2015.”

They all have skill and quickness as well as good vision and field awareness. Summer is no exception. She has quick feet, an explosive first step and the ability to break opponents down on the dribble one v. one. Her creativity and intensity will add depth to our wide players to continue our ability to attack teams relentlessly all over the field. We are very excited about Summer's potential as a future Vandal.”
