Big Sky Champs!!!

Vandals win back-to-back regular season championships

MOSCOW, Idaho – It was another dominant performance as Idaho (9-4-4, 6-1-2) took down Southern Utah (3-11-2, 2-6-1), 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Guy Wicks Field.  With the win, the Vandals guarantee at least a share of the 2016 Big Sky Regular Season Championship, the second straight season as conference champs.

"I thought we let up with it a little bit at the end of the first half and that's what we challenged them with at halftime, to come out and finish the job," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "The intensity, as well as the quality of play, to go ahead and put Southern Utah away.  We wanted to make sure we finished them off as soon as we could and we ended up getting a quality shutout and another win at home."

Emma Eddy got back to her scoring ways, putting Idaho up 1-0 in the fourth minute.  Elexis Schlossarek got the play started with the corner, and Eddy handled the rest with poise for her seventh goal of the season.

Eddy doubled the lead early in the second, finishing a cross from Olivia BaggerlyJosilyn Daggs found Eddy at the top of the box, who touched the ball back to Schlossarek.  Schlossarek sent in a ball over the top to Baggerly who tracked it down and sent in the low cross for Eddy.

Myah Merino added some insurance in the 69th minute, scoring her first collegiate goal.  Merino made a great touch after a bad Thunderbird pass and headed straight to goal.  She beat another defender, then got taken down from behind just before taking her shot to earn the penalty kick.  Merino stepped up to take it herself, finishing calmly into the back of the net.  Morgan Crosby netted her first of the season in the 73rd minute, ripping a free kick from range into the top corner.

Torell Stewart had a fine day in net, making five saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Idaho can still be caught by Eastern Washington in the Big Sky standings but have secured at least a share of the regular season title.  The right to host the Big Sky Tournament will come down to the final game, next Friday.
