Vandals Hold On

MOSCOW, Idaho – An incredible streak without a missed bucket to close the game helped push Idaho (16-10, 8-5 BSC) over North Dakota (12-12, 7-6 BSC), 65-64, on Saturday night at the Cowan Spectrum.

"I tell you what, I love this team we have," said head coach Don Verlin.  "This team fights.  They've had adversity, after adversity, after adversity this year with guys going down.  I thought our guys stepped up and battled their tails off.  They did exactly what I asked them to do.  I said it's all about defense and rebounding and it started there tonight."

The Vandals did not miss a field goal over the final 11:39 of the game, hitting their final eight shots.  North Dakota was forced to foul over the final minutes, and the Vandals converted enough to earn the win.  North Dakota had a chance to win, after grabbing a defensive rebound with just over five seconds to play, but the last-second shot went begging.

Idaho got production from across the board, with seven different Vandals scoring at least seven points.  Chad Sherwood and Nahshon George each finished in double-figures.

George stepped in nicely for the injured Ty Egbert, finishing with 11 points and seven boards off the bench.  The Vandals worked the ball down low frequently, with George and Arkadiy Mkrtychyan controlling the paint on the offensive end.

Perrion Callandret made his return to the lineup after missing the last nine games and finished with nine points and four boards.  Chris Sarbaugh flirted with a triple-double, finishing with eight points, nine boards and seven assists.

Idaho dominated the glass, outrebounding North Dakota 40-23.  The Vandals struggled controlling the ball, committing 19 turnovers on the night.

The Vandals got out to a slow start, trailing 9-1 after committing five turnovers in the opening minutes.  They would fight their way back into things, tying the game up late in the period.

The Vandals hit the road for their final contests away from Moscow next week, at Portland State and Sacramento State.  Check back with GoVandals.com as the games get closer for more information.
