IRVINE, Calif.- Sophie Hausmann closed out the fall season with a complete performance and second-place finish at the UC Irvine Invitational. Hausmann fired a 6-under (71-69-70=210) to take runner-up honors and lead Idaho women's golf to a fourth place team finish in the tournament played at Santa Ana Country Club.
Â
Hausmann was under par in each of her three rounds, carding 14 birdies for the tournament. She sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th green, vaulting her into second place on the final stroke. The junior finished three shots back of medalist Katrina Prendergast from Colorado State. Prendergast birdied 15, 16 and 17 to seal the victory.
Â
"Overall she played steady all week," said head coach
Lisa Johnson. "She managed the golf course well all three rounds. She was able to reach a couple of the par fives in two to set up birdies. The difference between first and second is just seeing some more putts go in."
Â
The Vandals finished the tournament at 30-over (302-294-298=894). Idaho sat in fifth after the first 36 holes Monday, and jumped ahead of host UC Irvine in the final round.
Â
"We finished really strong," Johnson said. "I was extremely proud of our finish. We started the third round very poorly, but the wind picked up with six holes to play and we managed that very well. Finishing fourth was a solid upward progression each round."
Â
Outside of Hausmann, the Vandals posted just one round under par with
Michelle Kim's second-round 71. Kim was Idaho's second finisher in a tie for 21st at 9-over (78-71-76=225).
Â
Idaho recorded top-10 team finishes in each of its five fall tournaments, including three times in the top five.
Â
"We definitely improved as the fall went on. We improved in some key areas: ball striking, club selections on approach shots. The last two events we definitely saw ourselves shoot some better numbers so that's encouraging heading into the offseason."
Â
The spring season will begin Feb. 12 and 13, at The Gold Rush in Long Beach, Calif.
Â
"We have a lot of work to do to get ready to win a conference championship" said Johnson. "We're fortunate to have our Jess and Kathleen Hall Indoor Performance Center and we will have a visit from a sport psychologist. We'll also take a little bit of time off to rest. We'll get back in the weight room. That will be key for a number of us."
