BOISE—Idaho doubles pair
Mark Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto won the 2017 Dar Walters Boise State Fall Classic on Sunday. The pair highlighted Idaho's tournament that featured strong play throughout the doubles and singles draws.
Idaho's top pair finished 5-0 on its way to the weekend title. The pair earned a bye in the opening round, beginning play in the round of 32. The duo eased past Idaho State's Adam Hornby and Keegan Sullivan in its first match, 8-3. The competition got stiff in the round of 16. Kovacs and Longhi Neto had to battle past Gonzaga's Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke, 9-8. The Idaho pair defeated Tommy Edwards and Avery West from Portland State and Cormac Clissold and Armando Soemarno of Oregon to advance to the championship match. Kovacs and Longhi Neto faced another Oregon opponent in the final. The pair held off Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry, 8-6, to claim the title.
The Vandal pair of
Lucas Coutinho and
Esteban Santibanez had a strong run in the tournament. The pair advanced to the quarterfinals with two early-round wins. They were ousted in a tight 9-7 loss to Clissold and Soemarno.
Kovacs and Longhi Neto also had success in individual play. Kovacs went 4-1 in singles on the weekend, advancing to the semifinals. He defeated players from Pacific, Gonzaga, Oregon and Montana. The Idaho senior fell to Montana's Victor Casadeval in three sets, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1, falling shy of the championship match.
Longhi Neto put together a 3-1 record in singles play. He fought through the tournament field, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-7, 11-9 win over Oregon's Stevens. The Idaho junior was bested in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2, by Montana's Casadeval.
The Vandals return to action at the ITA Regionals on Oct. 19. The tournament is set for three-days in Provo, Utah.
