OGDEN, Utah—Sophomore
Marianna Petrei earned her second Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week award on Wednesday the conference announced. The weekly honor is the fourth of her career.
Petrei, an Udine, Italy native, earned a pair of No. 1 singles victories against North Dakota and Washington State to improve to 7-1 overall on the season. She teamed up with
Lucia Badillos for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over UND's Faith Lee and Preethi Kasilingam as the Vandals took the doubles point. Petrei then made quick work of Alyssa Wolf at No. 1 singles, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Petrei claimed the first of five straight singles points for the Vandals, as they improved to 4-0 in Big Sky play and handed the Fighting Hawks their second league loss.
Making the quick trip across the border to Pullman, Wash., Petrei was one of two Idaho players to pick up a singles win against nearby Pac-12 opponent Washington State. She defeated the Cougars' Barboa Michalkova 6-3, 6-1, avenging a narrow 5-7 loss to Michalkova and Victoria Matejevic at No. 1 doubles earlier in the match.
The 2016 Big Sky MVP is coming off a stellar freshman campaign that saw her go undefeated in Big Sky singles play, 22-3 overall and drop just six sets all season. She is now a combined 29-4 and 14-0 in Big Sky action in her young career playing exclusively at No. 1 singles.
The Vandals are on the road this week. They will take on Wyoming on Friday.
