Sherrell, Colt Practice Action 2018-19

Vandals Tie for Third

Colt Sherrell shot 3-under in the final round and finished as the low Vandal

10/02/2018

VALENTINE, Neb. - Freshman Colt Sherrell shot 3-under Tuesday, to lead Idaho men's golf on the final day of the Jackrabbit Invitational, where the Vandals tied for third as a team. It is Idaho's best team finish in a regular-season tournament since winning the 2015 Southern Dunes Collegiate. Sherrell finished as the top Vandal, tying for 12th at 1-over (76-72-69=217).

"I'm super impressed with Colt's last 27 holes," said head coach David Nuhn. "He was 7-over par through 27 holes and 6-under on his last 27. That was awesome for us and awesome for him to get going. He was the anchor to our big round today."

Idaho shot 2-over as a team (290), matching its score from Monday's second round, for a final team score of 10-over 874 (294-290-290). The Vandals used consistent scoring throughout their lineup to stay high on the leaderboard. Four Vandals finished in the top 20 and all five competitors contributed a counting score during the tournament.

"To have our last counting score each day be 76, 75, 75 is fantastic," Nuhn said. "That consistent fourth score is what we've been in search of for a long time and to get it in three consecutive rounds is huge. The conditions were more difficult today, so shooting the same total score is really an indication that we played better than yesterday. There's still room for improvement, but we'll get to work on those things in practice."

Sherrell's 12th-place finish was followed tightly by a pack of Vandals. Sean Langham tied for 16th at 3-over (74-71-74=219), while seniors Klaus Ganter and Enrique Marin both tied for 20th at 4-over.

The Vandals tied for third with UMKC, who jumped up the rankings with a 5-under final round, and four shots clear of fifth-place Missouri.

"Beating Missouri is huge for us," said Nuhn. "That's a perennial top-40 team that made it to regionals last year. We're closer to where we should be but we're never satisfied until we're bringing home a trophy, so we still have plenty of room to improve. I'm really pleased with the effort and the positive attitude. Those are things we can build off of and now it's time to get back to work."

Idaho will be in action again Oct. 15 and 16, at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., hosted by Cal State Northridge.
