LONG BEACH, Calif-- Another 30-point plus performance by senior
Mikayla Ferenz not enough as the Vandals suffer second loss in the Beach Classic against host Long Beach State, 63-70, Saturday at the Walter Pyramid Arena.
Â
"Long Beach came out with amazing energy tonight, hungry for the win," said head coach
Jon Newlee. We did not come out and match their energy in the first half. The second half was a different story, and we had our chances to put the game away late, but unfortunately, we missed some open opportunities. We will learn from this weekend and build on this for the Big Sky Conference."
Â
Fresh off a 30-point performance the night before, dropped 31 points and nine boards against the LBSU; as the only other double-figure scorer for the Vandals was counterpart
Taylor Pierce with 11 points.
Â
Seven more Vandals found themselves in the scorers' column with
Hailey Christopher leading the pack with six points.
Natalie Klinker, right behind Ferenz, pulled down eight boards.
Â
While Long Beach left the half with a ten-point lead, Idaho chipped away at the lead in the third. Ferenz notched nine points of her 31 points. Down seven at 62-55 in the fourth quarter, Idaho used an 8-0 run that gave the Vandals their first lead since the first quarter.
Â
Long Beach State would answer with a jumper to end the Vandals' run, but a move from
Janie King with the shot clock expiring pushed the lead back up to three. Long Beach State would then lock down Idaho for the remainder of the contest. Idaho fought hard, but late rally effort fell short 63-70.

NEXT UP: The Vandals return to Memorial Gym for a match up Saturday, December 1 at 2 p.m. against the University of San Francisco.
