FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Idaho women's swimming and diving claimed the team title Sunday, on the final day of the 70th Annual Husky Invitational. The Vandals relied on depth Sunday, getting three scoring swims in four of the five individual events and two top-eight overall finishes in three of them.
Brianna Lucien again led the way, posting the fastest 1650-yard freestyle time in the collegiate division at 17:07.97 - the seventh-fastest time in Idaho history.
"We did a lot of really good things and I think everyone can walk away feeling good about something," said head coach
Mark Sowa. "But we're still only in midseason form and we can do a lot to get better."Â
Sarah Hall was the next collegian to touch the wall in the 1650 freestyle. Hall returned for the evening session and posted the fastest time by a collegiate competitor in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:04.59.
Leah Fisk and
Emily Kliewer each notched top-eight finishes in the 100-yard freestyle. Fisk clocked a 51.55 in the finals, improving on her prelim time by nearly a full second. The senior earned the individual high-point award for the college division.
Aileen Pannecoucke scored in the B final.
Aimee Iwamoto and
Lauren Votava were the top two collegians in the 200-yard breaststroke. Iwamoto set a career best in prelims with a 2:18.79, just missing out on the school's all-time top-20 list.
Cassie Dallas rounded out Idaho's scoring trio in with a 15th-place overall finish.
Freshman
Jamie Huerta turned in a 2:04.96 in the 200-yard butterfly final. Huerta's time would have been good for a seventh-place finish at last year's WAC Championships and would have been the best time by a Vandal last season.
Idaho will take the momentum of the team title into winter training. The Vandals will prepare for the final phase of its season over the next month, returning to dual-meet action Jan. 5, at New Mexico State. They have four meets remaining until the WAC Championships (Feb. 27-March 2), including a tri-dual against Grand Canyon and Simon Fraser Jan. 26, in the home finale.
