Idaho Sweeps Doubleheader

The Vandals went 2-0 against LCSC and Whitman College

LEWISTON, Idaho—Idaho men's tennis swept its doubleheader at Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday. The Vandals opened the morning with a 7-0 defeat of LCSC before concluding with a 5-2 win over Whitman College. 

The Vandals enter the final month of the season with an 8-6 record overall. The team has six matches left on the schedule, including five inside the Big Sky. Idaho currently sits atop the conference with a perfect 6-0 record. 

The Silver and Gold claimed the doubles point in both matches, earning the 1-0 advantage. Idaho's singles play was equally as strong with four Vandals going 2-0. 

Junior Carlos Longhi Neto played in the No. 1 slot in both matches for the Vandals. He went 1-1 on the day, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win against LCSC. His doubles partner, Mark Kovacs, filled the No. 2 position for the Vandals. His 6-3, 6-2 win against LCSC clinched the match against the Warriors. Kovacs capped off his day with a come-from-behind three set thriller (3-6, 6-4, 6-2). 

Sophomore Guilherme Scarpelli was 2-0 across No. 3. He recorded Idaho's first singles win against the Blues, walking away with a quick 6-1, 6-2 decision. Felipe Fonseca was also perfect on the day, giving him wins nine and 10 on the season. He dropped just five games at No. 4, earning wins of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2. 

Esteban Santibanez closed out Idaho's win over Whitman. His 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 was the clincher, giving Idaho a 4-1 lead. He also put together a 6-2, 6-2 win in the day's first match. 

Lucas Coutinho earned split at No. 6. He defeated LCSC 6-3, 7-6(3) in the first match. 

Next up for Idaho is a date with Montana State. The Vandals will take on the Bobcats on Wednesday and then work over to Missoula to take on Montana on Thursday. The two matches were previously scheduled for March 3-4 but had to be postponed due to travel concerns.
