Hausmann Wraps up U.S. Open

Finishes first major championship

06/02/2018

SHOAL CREEK, Ala.—The second round of the 73rd U.S. Women's Open concluded early Saturday morning at Shoal Creek Country Club. Idaho's Sophie Hausmann shot a 4-over 76 to wrap up her round that was cut short by multiple delays on Friday.

Hausmann, who turned 21 on Saturday, became the first Idaho woman—past or present—to participate in the U.S. Women's Open. She finished 10-over, 154 (78, 76), for the tournament, missing the cut in her first major championship appearance. She was one of 29 amateurs in this year's field.

"It has been an amazing week," Hausmann said about her experience. "I got to meet some great people. I had some Idaho fans here to cheer and support me and I was able to get a feel for what professional golf 'feels' and looks like."

Hausmann totaled two birdies, three pars and three bogeys to round out her abbreviated back-nine with an even-par 36. Her round was stopped after a birdie on the 10th hole on Friday. She resumed play with a par on the 526-yard par-5, 11th hole. Hausmann's back-to-back birdies at the par-3 13th hole and the par-4 14th hole got her to 2-under on the back. She dropped back to even with a pair of bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes.

"I learned a lot this week even if it was not the score I was looking for," Hausmann added. "I realized what I'm pretty good at, but also saw where I lose strokes against a talented field like this."

The 2018 Big Sky Golfer of the Year got through the first seven holes before a nearly four-hour weather delay. Hausmann pared the 8th and 9th holes to close the front at 4-over (40). She totaled five pars and four bogeys before the turn.

"Sophie learned that she absolutely can compete at the professional level this week," caddie and Idaho head coach Lisa Johnson noted. "This has been a tremendous experience for her and will undoubtedly prepare her for the next stage in her golf career. We were extremely proud of her tenacity this week on the grandest stage. It was an honor to caddie for her."

Hausmann will be one of two seniors for the Vandals next season. She and Michelle Kim will help lead Idaho in its quest for a second consecutive Big Sky championship.

Sweden's Linn Grant remained the low-amateur at 3-under. She sits seven strokes back Sarah Jane Smith, who climbed atop the leaderboard at 10-under on Friday.
