MALIBU, Calif. - Idaho women's tennis senior
Marianna Petrei dropped a three-set match Friday, in the round of 16 at the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters. Petrei took on 18th-ranked Kate Fahey of Michigan - the number-two seed in the tournament - and won the first set before falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Petrei was making her third appearance at the ITA Masters, an event that pits 32 of the best male and female college tennis student-athletes in the nation against each other.
One individual from each Division I conference receives an invitation, while at-large selections are used to fill in the remaining field. Petrei has represented the Big Sky each of the last three seasons.
PULLMAN, Wash. - Three Idaho women's tennis student-athletes represented the Vandals Friday, on the first day of the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State.
Maggie Chen, Marta Magalhaes and
Laura Spataro each won a match in singles, while Chen and Spataro had a bye in doubles.
Magalhaes is still alive in the Gray Draw and will take on Washington State's Aneta Miksovska in the semifinals Saturday, at 1 p.m. Magalhaes had a bye through the first round before downing Boise State's Vanessa Timm 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Chen won her opening match in straight sets before falling in the quarterfinals of the Crimson Draw against Wilhelmina Palmer from Boise State. Spataro followed a similar fate in the Gray Draw. She picked up a straight-sets win against Montana State's Evi Buijsen, but fell later in the day against Washington State's Melisa Ales.
Each Vandal will be in action Saturday, beginning with Chen and Spataro teaming up in doubles at 10 a.m. against a WSU duo.
