GREELEY, Colo. - Seniors led the way for Idaho women's swimming and diving, but Northern Colorado protected its home pool Saturday as the Bears defeated the Vandals, 182-118.
Janelle Lucas and
Nikki Imanaka each won a diving event, while
Leah Fisk and
Lauren Votava each picked up an individual swimming win.
Lucas and Imanaka took turns atop the podium in the springboard diving events. Lucas ran away with the 1-meter event, scoring 280.42 - ahead of Imanaka whose 259.42 edged out Northern Colorado's top diver for second.
Imanaka led a Vandal sweep on 3-meter. Her 278.10 was good for first place, ahead of Lucas at 273.52 and
Heather Carbon's 254.25.
Fisk captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.88, winning by nearly a full second. She has now won the 200 freestyle in Idaho's last dual meets. Fisk also took second in the 100- and 500-yard freestyle races.
Northern Colorado made its move after Fisk's win. In a span of four consecutive races the Bears earned a narrow victory in the 100-yard backstroke, took the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke and swept the top three spots in both the 200-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle.
Idaho kept fighting behind its veteran leadership. In the tightest race of the day, Votava touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke. She stopped the clock at 2:28.27, just two-tenths of a second ahead of UNC's Maria Heymans and less than half a second before
Aimee Iwamoto.
Fellow seniors
Sarah Hall and
Emily Kliewer combined for three second-place finishes. Hall was the runner up in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, while Kliewer took second in the 100-yard butterfly. Both joined Fisk on Idaho's second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team to close the meet.
Each of Idaho's seniors will be recognized Saturday, prior to the Vandals' home finale against Grand Canyon and Simon Fraser. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the U of I Swim Center. Divers from College of Idaho will also participate in the meet.
