AUGUSTA, Ga. - Idaho women's golf senior Sophie Hausmann received an official invitation Friday, to participate in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur. The 72-player field features the top female amateur golfers in the world. The event will take place April 3-6, at Champions Retreat Golf Club and Augusta National.

The field will compete 54 holes of stroke play in three rounds over four days. The first 36 holes will be completed April 3-4, on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club. The entire field, regardless of cut line, will play Augusta National Friday, April 5, for an official practice round. The final round will take place at Augusta National on Saturday, April 6, featuring the top 30 competitors through two rounds.

"This is the first women's amateur that will be played on the Augusta course," Hausmann said. "That's a really big deal and I am happy to be part of it. Long term, the goal is to play on the LPGA so this is a good step toward it. It's going in the right direction, but there is still a lot of improvement to make before then."

Hausmann earned her spot in the field by virtue of her World Amateur Golf Ranking. She is currently No. 63 in the WAGR rankings, after reaching a career best of 53rd last year. Invitations were first sent to winners of six elite international amateur championships during the 2018 season. The top 30 Americans in the WAGR standings received the next round of invites, followed by the next 30 highest-ranked players in the WAGR standings not otherwise qualified for the tournament. The remaining field was filled by invitation of the tournament committee.

"I don't know if I've comprehended it all myself," said head coach Lisa Johnson. "I'm just so proud of Sophie that she put herself in the position to where she was invited. She deserves it. She's worked extremely hard for it and I know she's one of the best players in the world. She deserves to be in this event."

Hausmann is the reigning Big Sky Player of the Year and two-time Big Sky Championship individual champion. She became first first Vandal to finish under par at an NCAA Regional, before embarking on an full summer of international competition. Hausmann qualified and competed at the U.S. Women's Open, the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship, the European Ladies' Amateur Championships and the World Amateur Team Championship, representing her native Germany. She is the first Vandal - past or present - to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.

NBC Sports will carry the final round live from Augusta National. Golf Channel will carry highlights, live reports and other coverage from Champions Retreat on the first two days of play. Golf Channel will also begin its "Live From the Masters" coverage at Augusta National on the day of the practice round. The 2019 Masters Tournament will take place April 11-14, at Augusta National.

"When I was young women weren't event allowed to be members at Augusta," Johnson said. "So to see where golf has come from my younger days to where there are female members at Augusta, and now they're having a world amateur event for women, it's a huge deal."

Idaho's spring season begins Monday (Jan. 28). at the Mission Hills Invitational in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Hausmann enters her final semester as a Vandal having finished in the top 25 at each of her last 10 tournaments and 18 of her last 20. She has 14 career top-10 finishes, including four times in five outings during Idaho's 2018 fall schedule.
