BANDON, Ore. - Idaho men's golf battled tough weather conditions to shoot the fourth-best score in the field Tuesday, and finish 13th at the Bandon Dunes Championship. The Vandals shot a 13-over 301 to move up two spots on the final day.
Enrique Marin led a pack of Vandals at 10-over for the tournament to finish tied for 40th.
Travis Hansen and
Sean Langham paced Idaho's third-round performance, each shooting a 1-over 73 despite the elements.Â
"What a day," said head coach
David Nuhn. "I think we saw five seasons worth of weather out there and the only consistent one was wind. It was raining, hailing, sunny, hailing, raining, sunny. But it was a good day. Our score was better yesterday, but I think we played better today as a unit."
Idaho was in last place after a first-round 321, but steadily climbed the leaderboard each of the next two days. The Vandals bounced back Monday, improving by 31 strokes to shoot 290. Hansen led the resurgence. He shot a 2-under 70 just 24 hours after carding an 85. That level of play continued Tuesday, with his 1-over 73, helping him finish tied for 49th just two strokes behind Marin at 12-over for the tournament.
Colt Sherrell finished in a tie for 55th at 13-over.
Langham also persevered after a tough opening round. He shot an 86 Sunday, before responding with a 76 Monday, followed by his 1-over 73 in the final round.
"I think we showed a lot of poise after Sunday's round," Nuhn said. "We're getting to the point where guys are comfortable competing. I'm starting to see the same level of play in tournaments that I see in qualifying and practice rounds. It's getting exciting."
The Vandals continue their spring break road trip March 15-16, at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix.
