BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - Valeria Patino shot an even-par 72 Friday, to lead Idaho women's golf in the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate Invitational. Patino is tied for 13th through 18 holes, while the Vandals sit in a tie for 12th at 17-over 305. Idaho is 10 strokes out of seventh place. It is Idaho's first appearance at the event hosted by Wake Forest, played at the Bryan Park Champions Course.
" This golf course is a fun challenge," said head coach
Lisa Johnson. "I am confident we will improve our scoring tomorrow after having seen the course for the practice round and the first round of competition. Strong golf course management is crucial here and we are still learning the intricacies of this great course."
Patino,
Sophie Hausmann and
Vicky Tsai each birdied three holes in the opening round. Patino was 2-under through six holes before mixing three bogeys and one more birdie among eight pars on her final 12 holes to come in at even. Hausmann stumbled upon four bogeys on her way to a 1-over 73. She is tied for 16th through the first round. Tsai carded just seven pars on the day. One nine-hole stretch saw her record just one par alongside two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. She shot a 6-over 78 and is tied for 64th.
Idaho will begin the second round Saturday, from the 10th hole at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT.
