BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Windy conditions ripped through Boulder Creek Golf Club as the Idaho women closed out their front nine and continued gusting up to 35 miles per hour for the rest of the second round Saturday, at the Big Sky Championships. The Vandals turned in a 19-over 307 to move up one spot in the standings, but were unable to keep pace with Sacramento State and Eastern Washington who teed off earlier in the day and avoided much of the blustery weather. Idaho sits fourth headed into Sunday's final round.
"We knew we had to play ourselves into the early-morning twosome because of weather," said head coach
Lisa Johnson. "Wind picked up for us on eight and it was a battle. We actually played well given the conditions. We fought hard and we will do so again tomorrow."
Valeria Patino weathered the storm and recorded 16 consecutive pars to start the day. A double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 left Patino with a 75 on the day and 4-over for the tournament. Those three strokes moved her from a tie for third to a tie for 10th.
Sophie Hausmann climbed five positions Saturday, shooting a 3-over 75 in the second round. Hausmann is tied for 12th at 5-over, one stroke behind Patino.
Michelle Kim is a stroke behind Hausmann at 6-over for the tournament. Kim shot a 77 in the second round, closing with bogeys on 16 and 18.
Preseason-favorite Sacramento State leads the way in the team standings at 11-over. The Hornets hold a seven-shot advantage over Eastern Washington. Northern Colorado's Beah Cruz is the individual leader at 2-under. Cruz enters the final round with a two stroke advantage and will be playing in the last group of the day.
Idaho will tee off in the third group Sunday, alongside Portland State and Montana State for the second straight day. The Vikings and Bobcats are tied for fifth at 28-over, one stroke behind the Vandals.Â
