UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Idaho men's golf took 15th at the Redhawk Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Course. The Vandals finished the tournament at 8-over (860), led by freshman
Colt Sherrell's 2-under 211. Sherrell tied for 26th, highlighted by a career-best 67 in the opening round.
"Everybody who played for the Vandals feels like they left three to four shots out there," said head coach
David Nuhn. "Today, collectively, we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be with our execution. We missed the wrong shot at the wrong time."
Idaho shot 2-under as a team in the first round Monday, followed by a 1-over performance in the second round. The Vandals closed the tournament with a 9-over 293, getting a team-best even-par 71 from
Travis Hansen, followed by four scores of 3-over 74.
Hansen was one stroke behind Sherrell at 1-under 212. He was consistent throughout the tournament, firing an opening-round 70 followed by a pair of 71s.
"I'm excited about what Colt did this week leading the team," Nuhn said. "Travis was solid all three rounds and that was good to see out of him."
Sean Langham posted Idaho's other sub-70 round, carding a 3-under 68 in the second round. Langham sandwiched that effort with two 74s to finish at 3-over and in a tie for 55th.
"This was a youthful group here that had a great chance to grow here," Nuhn said. "We showed we can be right there with all these teams yesterday and today. We'll learn from it and look forward to getting Enrique (Marin) back in the lineup after healing up a little bit."
The Vandals conclude their regular season April 12-14, at El Macero Classic in Davis, Calif. The Big Sky Championships are set for April 26-28, near Las Vegas.
