Idaho closed out the non-conference portion of the 2019 season against a familiar foe: Eastern Washington. Despite competing outside conference play, the meeting had all the excitement of a traditional Big Sky matchup.
The Vandals entered the game 1-2 on the season, after a one-score loss at Wyoming the week prior. More important than the loss, however, was the damage done to the roster.
"We had five starters out," said head coach
Paul Petrino. "Five guys. That's another reason to be proud."
But after 30 minutes of play, it wasn't the Vandals that looked shorthanded. Idaho dominated to the tune of 147 rushing yards in the first two quarters. The defense was just as spectacular, holding the high-powered EWU offense to just 103 total yards in the first half. Idaho scored early and often, and took a 28-0 advantage into the break.
"We were feeling good, 28-0," said
Jeff Cotton. "It was something we told ourselves we were going to do. It gave us confidence and excitement to go out there and finish the game."
"I want to stay humble, I want our team to stay humble. I want us to know we got here by working hard," Petrino said. "But I would say we outplayed them at every single position in the first half."
EWU made a run in the second half but the Vandal offense did what it needed to do to keep them at bay.
Relive all the action beginning at noon Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 17.
