MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho swim continued its tremendous start to the 2020-21 season, winning six-of-eight events on day two of action against Seattle U.
Katie Hale had a tremendous day, winning two individual events and two relays. The Vandals lead the way, 152-89, with just four events remaining.
Â
"It's unbelievable. Yesterday during the national anthem it was hard not to get a little choked up because it's been such a long eight months trying to get to this point," said head coach
Mark Sowa. "I'm so thankful that Seattle did things right to get themselves down here. I'm so happy that our university, our athletic department,
Terry Gawlik,
Chris Walsh, put us in a situation that we can do what we love, and that's compete and do our sport. This is awesome. We're so blessed."
Â
Ani Husaby,
Holly Keir, Hale and
Rylie Jones got things started with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.89. Hale went on to win the 100-yard back in 56.50, while Jones took the 200-yard free in 1:53.65.
Â
Haylee Buyers placed first in a close hear of the 400-yard individual medley. She won in 4:36.17, edging Seattle U's Isabella Guadiamos by three one-hundredths of a second.
Â
The third session started with another Vandal relay win. Hale, Jones,
Natalie Crocker and
Kaling Phung won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:35.98. Hale earned another win, this time in the 100-yard free at 51.43 seconds.
Â
"We're swimming great," Sowa added. "I don't want to say it's surprising, but like every team in the country it has been very hard to stay consistently in the water. But we're healthy, we have all 27 kids in the water right now which is great. They're enjoying racing.
Â
"I think the freshmen are performing really well. Our three transfers are doing great. Our junior leadership, between Jamie, Natalie and Katie, they're performing great. Katie's 50-free yesterday was awesome, only two-tenths off her best time and two-tenths faster than she was last year at this time. I thought her backstrokes were really good. Alexa's (Teneyck) 1000 win yesterday, that was great. It was one of the best things she's done since she's been a Vandal and she was excited about that."
Â
Competition concludes on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Â
"We need to refocus. It is not going to be easy to go fast tomorrow morning because again they haven't raced in a long time," said Sowa. "To do three hard days of competition, they're going to feel it. But that's good. We want to practice being fatigued and trying to figure out how to be great. I'm sure you'll see us be great Vandals tomorrow."
