RESULTS
MOSCOW, Idaho – The Vandal indoor track and field team held its final home meet of the season on Friday. The Vandal men won the meet with 129 points, while the women took second with 137 points.
"I was really pleased with how the meet went. When we were organizing it originally, we designed it as a team scoring meet to get us ready as we move forward to conference championships and start competing in a team field," said director of track and field/cross country
Tim Cawley. "For the men to win it and the women to come in second was really exciting and a good indication of where we are."
Zachary Short won the shot put with a season's best mark of 19.49m (63-11.50). The senior is now 13th on the national performance list and remains in first in the Big Sky Conference. Grady Leonard finished second in the event with his own season's best of 18.12m (59-05.50), which puts him third in the conference and 43rd nationally.
Meanwhile, in the weight throw,
Cullen Williams took first with a career-best 19.26m (63-02.25) which launches him to third in the BSC.
Hannah Ringel once again won the women's shot put with a mark of 14.15m (46-05.25).
Ben Doucette won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.93 seconds. He also was second in the 200-meter dash (21.88), with
Spencer Barrera just behind in third (22.08). Doucette's 200-meter time is tied for the fourth best in the BSC this season, while Barrera's sits 12th on the league performance list.
In the women's 200-meter dash,
Camryn Crouch won the event in 25.53 and
Aaryanna Kurucz was fourth. Those times were good enough to move the Vandals to 10th and 19th, respectively, in the Big Sky Conference.
Vandals took first in both the men's and women's long jump.
Rechelle Meade won with a leap of 5.96m (19-06.75), while
Jordyn Rauer was third and
Karina Moreland was fifth. Rauer moved to a tie for seond on the BSC performance list this season, while Moreland is tied for 10th. On the men's side,
Zachary Nunis took first with a mark of 7.29m (23-11.00).
Britt Ipsen was fouth in the event. Nunis also won the triple jump (14.63m/48-00.00) with the fourth best mark in the conference this season.
Rauer leaped a career-best 12.21m (40-00.75) in the triple jump to win the event and jump to second in the BSC performance list. Moreland and Greta Kuhne was third and fourth, respectively.
In the 800-meter run,
Dean Ellenwood took first in 1:51.76, which is now the best time in the conference this year. Teammate
Jenner Higgins was fourth (1:54.64). On the women's side, Vandals took second, third, and fourth.
Anna Pecha was second (2:13.83), while
Malaina Thacker and
Faith Dilmore were third and fourth, respectively. All three move into the top-10 in the Big Sky Conference performance list, joining
Krista Story who is second.
The Idaho women's 4x400 relay team of
Anna Pecha,
Malaina Thacker,
Erica Pecha, and
Makenna Schuler won the event in 4:07.37. The men's team consisting of
Nathan Burton,
Dean Ellenwood,
Jenner Higgins, and
Josiah Anderson was second (3:19.82).
In the men's mile,
Caleb Seely was fifth (4:18.70), and on the women's side,
Krista Story was third (4:59.44). Meanwhile in the 3000-meter run,
Tim Stevens was second (8:26.15) and
Ryan Kline was third (8:29.41), and for the women,
Kelsey Swenson was second (9:58.39) and
Nathalia Campos was fifth (10:09.23). Swenson's performance moved her to 10th in the Big Sky this year.
In the 400-meter dash,
Camryn Crouch took second in 58.94, while
Aaryanna Kurucz was just behind in third (59.02). On the men's side of the event,
Spencer Barrera (48.59) and
Kaizer Gillispie (49.25) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Barrera now has the second best time in the BSC this season, while Gillispie sits ninth.
Julia Hayes was fifth in the high jump (1.62m/5-03.75).
"I thought there was really impressive performances in all areas by our team: distance, throws, sprints, jumps. All of them put it together to do some neat things," said Cawley. "I love that the team supported each other as well as they did. I think we're in a really good place heading forward and I think this shows that and I'm excited for the next few weeks. I think we're coming into form at the right time."
The Vandals will travel to two different meets next week as final preparation for the Big Sky Championships. Some will travel to the Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas, while some will travel to Boise for the Bronco Challenge.
