Vandals fall short to Southern Utah despite 35 points from Allen

Box Score BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho men's basketball team fell to Southern Utah, 75-69, on Wednesday afternoon in the Big Sky Championships First Round. The game was a battle, with the Vandals (8-24) trailing by two at the break, and the Thunderbirds (17-15) pulling away late to move on in the tournament.

THE GAME
Southern Utah jumped out to a seven-point lead, 12-5, with five minutes played, but the Vandals fought back to get within one, 17-16. The Thunderbirds continued to push, going ahead by nine, but once again Idaho chipped away. The Vandals went on a 9-0 run to tie up the game, 27-27, with 2:25 remaining until half. A pair of T-Bird free throws sent SUU into the locker room with a 29-27 lead over Idaho.
 
The second half began as a back-and-forth affair. The Vandals took their first lead of the game at 33-32 when Trevon Allen made a driving layup with 17:30 to play. SUU attempted to build out a lead and led by a game-high nine points with just over ten minutes to play. Idaho refused to go away and once again fought back into the game. Babacar Thiombane made a layup with six minutes remaining to tie things up once again.
 
There were five ties in the final 6:05, as the Vandals and Thunderbirds exchanged baskets. With 2:17 to play and the score tied, 69-69, Cameron Oluyitan scored to give SUU a two-point lead. The size of the seven seed proved too much as Idaho was unable to make a basket and were forced to foul. The T-Birds made four free throws down the stretch, clinching the win to move on in the bracket.
 
Trevon Allen led the Vandals with 35 points and eight rebounds. Ja'Vary Christmas chipped in 10 points, while Damen Thacker had six points and a game-high nine boards.
 
THE NOTES
Allen surpassed 30 points for the fifth time this season, and third-consecutive game. He finished his career with 1395 total points, eighth in school history. He also finished with 647 points this season, which is seventh in school history.
 
Thacker pulled down a career-high nine rebounds in the game. He also drew three charges.
 
The Vandals outrebounded the Thunderbirds, 33-29.
 
Idaho shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the floor. SUU was 26-for-53 (49.1 percent) from the field.
 
A game after drawing 12 fouls, Allen drew eight fouls. He was 11-for-13 from the charity stripe.
 
Both the Vandals and the Thunderbirds had 10 turnovers, with Idaho cashing in for 11 points and SUU scoring seven.
 
SUU outscored Idaho in points in the paint, 34-28.
 
THE NAME
Trevon Allen. Allen, in his final game in a Vandal jersey, scored 35 points, just one shy of his career high. The game capped off a three-game stretch in which he scored 100 points. The senior also had eight rebounds, one assist, and two steals.
