Vandals tennis hosts Weber State Friday, Idaho State Saturday

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho Men's Tennis team will open conference play at home this weekend against Weber State and Idaho State.

Idaho (4-4) enters Big Sky play on the heels of a 7-0 loss to Boise State, after compiling an even 4-4 non-conference record.

The Vandals will host Weber State in Lewiston, Idaho on Friday at 5 p.m. before hosting Idaho State on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the LCSC tennis complex.

Weber State enters the contest 7-6 on the season so far and are 2-0 in conference play with wins over Idaho State, 5-2, and Sacramento State, 7-0.

Idaho and the Wildcats have played two common opponents this season during the non-conference schedule. In the first match of the season, Idaho fell to Utah 7-0 in Salt Lake City before defeating Utah State 5-2 in Logan. Weber State also played Utah and Utah State. The Wildcats fell to Utah, 2-5, earlier in the season and recently fell to Utah State 6-1.  Arthur Serafim leads the Wildcats with an 8-3 record on the season in singles play as has been twice named the Big Sky Player of the Week this season.
Idaho State enters the contest 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in the Big Sky with wins over Northern Colorado, 5-2, and Sacramento State, 4-3. The only Big Sky loss for the Bengals this season was to Weber State, 2-5.

For the Vandals, Francisco Bascon leads the way so far. Bascon has played in the number one singles spot six times this season and in the number one doubles spot during seven matches. Bascon is 4-3 overall on the season and leads the Vandals in singles wins, alongside Althaf Dhaifullah who also has four singles wins.  Dhaifullah has spent majority of the season in the number two spot but appeared in the number one spot two weeks ago against George Fox, winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 over Will Leach and also played in the No. 1 spot against Boise State.

Bascon and his doubles partner Esteban Santibanez have played in the number one doubles spot during seven matches this season and are 6-1. The duo's only loss of the season came against Portland and have won three consecutive matches since then. Santibanez and Bascon are ranked No. 72 in the latest ITA NCAA Division I Men's Doubles rankings. The pair's biggest win of the season came against the No. 37 ranked doubles pair in the first match of the season at Utah.
