Vandals Welcome Wildcats for Pair of Games

MOSCOW, Idaho –
The Idaho Vandals welcome Weber State for a pair of games this week. The two teams will first meet on Thursday evening at 6 p.m., before playing again on Saturday with tipoff set for noon.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS (7-4, 2-2 BSC): WSU has had a stop-and-start beginning to the season with six games being cancelled. The Wildcats went 5-2 in nonconference games.

As a team, Weber State is scoring a league-high 84.4 points per game, while allowing 69.0 ppg. Isiah Brown leads the squad in scoring, averaging 18.9 ppg. Cody Carlson and Zahir Porter both score 12.5 ppg, with Carlson pulling down 5.3 rebounds per game to lead WSU.

Most recently, the Wildcats split a pair of games with Southern Utah. WSU won, 91-67, at home before falling, 77-72, to the Thunderbirds on the road. In the win, Carlson (25) and Brown (22) both had 20-point games, and Brown followed that up with a game-high 26 points in the loss.

SCOUTING THE VANDALS (0-11, 0-8 BSC): The Vandals average 62.0 ppg, allowing 76.7 ppg. Scott Blakney leads Idaho with 12.0 ppg, while Damen Thacker (11.6 ppg) also averages in double figures. Tanner Christensen pulls down 4.5 rpg to lead the team.

LAST TIME OUT: The Vandals fell to Northern Colorado in a pair of games. Thacker scored in double figures in both games, while Blakney tied his career high (23 points) in Saturday's game.

SERIES HISTORY: Idaho is 25-58 all-time against Weber State, with the Wildcats winning the last four games.

STEADY SENIOR
Senior Scott Blakney is leading the team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per game. He scored a career-high 23 points against NAU (Jan. 2) and then tied that total against UNCO (Jan. 16). He has scored in double figures in six of this year's 11 games. Overall, the senior is shooting 61.4 percent from the floor.

FREE THROW FUN
Damen Thacker is 28-for-30 from the charity stripe this season. His 93.3 free throw percentage is the best in the conference and seventh in the nation. In conference only games, Thacker is shooting 96.6 percent from the line, which is also the best in the Big Sky.

Hunter Madden (15-for-15) and DeAndre Robinson (5-for-5) are also reliable from the stripe when they get there.

ALWAYS THERE
Gabe Quinnett leads the Vandals and is 10th in the league in minutes played with 32.0 minutes per game. The sophomore is third on the team scoring 9.0 points per game.

NEW HIGHS
Damen Thacker set a new career-high in points against SUU (Jan. 7). He led the team with 27 points, going 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

Scott Blakney and Gabe Quinnett both set new career-highs for points in the overtime loss to NAU (Jan. 2).

Blakney scored 23 points to lead the team. He also tallied a team-high five rebounds. Blakney reached 23 points again against UNCO (Jan. 16).

Quinnett scored 18 points against NAU, going 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS
Ja'Vary Christmas had a career-high six assists against SUU (Jan. 7). The senior is currently averaging 2.3 assists per game. He has tallied at least four assists in four different games.

Damen Thacker also recorded six assists against NAU (Jan. 2). The total was a new career-high. He is averaging 2.6 assists per game which is 11th in the conference.

SEEING DOUBLE
Damen Thacker has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games. He is second on the team, averaging 11.6 ppg.

GET TO WORK
Transfer DeAndre Robinson has immediately made a difference as a Vandal. He is second on the squad in rebounding (3.6 rpg) while scoring 7.0 ppg, which is fourth on the team. The junior is shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. He is also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

HOME SWEET HOME
The Vandals are in the midst of a five-game homestand. Idaho played two against the Northern Colorado Bears before welcoming Weber State for a pair of games following a bye week. The homestand will conclude on February 4 when Eastern Washington comes to Memorial Gym for one game, before the Vandals head to Cheney for the rematch on February 6.

SIGNED
Two players have signed to join the Vandals next season.

RJ Walker is from Decatur, Ill. He is a guard who averaged 17 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 spg, and 3.2 apg his junior season.

Yusef Salih, from Richmond, Va., averaged 14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, and 2.3 steals per game in 2019-20. He was named First Team All-Conference.
