MOSCOW, Idaho - With this past Sunday's game against Eastern Washington,
Taylor Brust has broken
the All-Time Appearances Record for the Vandals, a record that was held for nearly
a decade (78 - Liz Boyden 08'-12' and Kelly Dopke 15'-18').
Brust was a freshman in 2016 and ended up redshirting that fall season. In the spring of
2017, she found out she had a heart condition and had to have surgery to correct it.
Coming back after heart surgery, Brust started the first game of the 2017 season and
never looked back, playing in every game for the Vandals that season. She played all
but 90 minutes in the midfield, helped the team to four shutouts, and chipped in with two
goals that season as well.
During the 2018 season when the Vandals finished second place in the Big Sky Conference, Brust once again anchored the midfield, helped the team to
nine shutouts, and added one goal and two assists. However, following this season, Brust had to have surgery again, this time on her
ankle.
The spring of 2019 was filled with rehab on her ankle and returning to full fitness. In
the fall of 2019, Brust would have to step into a pivotal role for her team when they
needed her most. Midway through the season they needed a centerback. When
asked to drop in and play the position, Taylor met the challenge head on. Since that day, she
went from being the anchor in the midfield to being the anchor in the backline,
playing the most minutes of anyone on the team while adding two goals and one assist, helping the team to 3 shutouts. Brust was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the
Week once and was named First Team All Conference for the 2019 season.
In 2020 Brust elected to start grad school and come back for her redshirt season,
but due to Covid, the season was pushed to the Spring of 2021. She tallied one assist,
helped the team to four shutouts, and played every minute of every game that season,
leading the Vandals to a second place finish in the Northwest Division of the Big Sky
Conference. Brust was named Second Team All Conference for the spring 2021
season.
With the addition of the extra year of eligibility because of Covid, Brust made the
decision to extend her grad school program and take her final class this fall, coming back for one more shot at making history for the 2021 season. She has again
been the rock in the defense, playing every minute of every game she has played in,
has helped the team to 5 shutouts so far, and is currently second on the team in
assists with a total of four.
In addition to her athletics accolades, Brust has also been a 4-time Big Sky All
Academic honoree.
She made her record breaking 79th appearance for the Vandals during their Sunday match versus Eastern
Washington in the regular season finale that the Vandals won, 2-1, in double
overtime. She will add onto that record next week at the Big Sky Conference
Tournament in Greeley, CO.
Here's what her current and former teammates had to say about her:
Kelly Dopke (15'-18'): "Playing with Tay, I knew she was special and going to be a
leader for this team. There is no one else I'd rather see surpass me on the
leaderboard than her! Well deserved!"
Myah Merino (16'-20/21'): "Taylor is an incredible player and role model on and off
the field. I'm so proud to have been apart of her class knowing that her commitment
and passion for the team helped grow this program tremendously. Vandals soccer
will miss you, but your legacy will carry on!"
Maddie Haas (18'-current): "Taylor is the epitome of what is means to be a Vandal.
It's pretty cool to be able to watch such an amazing person off the field, be able to
achieve something so phenomenal on the field. If anyone deserves this honor, it
would be Tay."
Savannah Foster (18'-current): "Taylor has been an undeniable leader for this team
from the second she stepped on the field. She has helped us maintain a culture of
hard work and dedication to not just soccer, but each other as well. She's the first
person we go to talk to when anything is going wrong and the first person to
celebrate with you when everything is going right. Whether it be her first
appearance, her 79 th , or her last for Vandals Soccer, her impact on this team and this
program will last forever."
