Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho- The University of Idaho Women's tennis team earned their first win of the season, defeating Portland State 4-2 in a neutral site contest in Eugene, Oregon, Saturday.
To begin the match Idaho took the No. 1 and No. 2 two doubles matches, winning the doubles point.
Melissa Huchet and
Laura Spataro defeated Lotti Meszaros and Makoto Ohara in No. 1 doubles, 6-3.
Maggie Chena and
Katherine Jhang defeated Emily Reese and Ashley Ramirez 6-2 in No. 2 doubles, winning the double point.
In singles play only five matches were played. Idaho won three out of five, securing the match win.
Spataro topped Meszaros 6-3,6-3, (6-10).
Melissa Huchet defeated Makoto Ohara 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.
Katherine Jhang secured the final point for the Vandals, winning 6-4, 6-3, over Gerda Upeniece in the No. 5 doubles slot.
"It's always good to get your first win of the season," said Head Coach
Babar Akbar. "We played a very competitive Portland State team. This match could have gone either way, but the girls played well, and we pulled out a tough match. We are looking forward to playing them again in the conference tournament later in the year. Now we are focusing our energies to compete against Oregon.
