MOSCOW, Idaho – Number seven
Cutrell Haywood caught the 7-yard touchdown pass from the hand of
Nikhil Nayar with seven seconds remaining to lift Idaho (2-1, 2-1) past Southern Utah (1-3, 1-3), 33-32.
Nayar stepped in late to lead the Vandals in the fourth quarter. He didn't take the field until the second to last play of the third, but still finished the night 12-of-20 for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman
CJ Jordan was impressive in his first career start, going 16-of-27 for 183 yards in the air, and adding 38 yards on the ground.
Dylan Thigpen was a stud on Saturday. The senior carried the ball nine times for 110 yards and a 24-yard score.
Hayden Hatten was the top receiver on the day with career-highs of 12 catches and 155 yards.
Defensively,
Fa'Avae Fa'Avae stepped in and set a career-high with 18 tackles.
Noah Elliss picked up his first sack, while
Jaxon Woodward and
Awan Parker each grabbed interceptions.
Idaho took the early lead on a 1-yard touchdown by
Roshaun Johnson. The lead was short-lived, as the Thunderbirds quickly drove down field to tie the score.
Cade Coffey closed out the first with a field goal to give the Vandals the 10-7 advantage.
SUU took control in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns to go up, 22-13, at the break.
After a Thigpen touchdown and another SUU score, the Vandals found themselves down by nine heading into the fourth quarter with Nayar about to step on the field.
