MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho men's tennis team will close out the regular season against Portland State this weekend.
On Saturday, April 15, the Vandals will take on the Vikings at 1p.m. in Lewiston.
Entering their final matches of the regular season, the Vandals currently sit at second place in the North division with a 2-1 record. Portland State is undefeated in conference play, sitting atop the North division at 3-0.
In the new format this season the top two teams from each division will advance to the Big Sky Championships.
Bruno Casino leads the Vandals in singles wins on the season with a 9-2 record. Casino has played in both the No. 3 (8-2) and No. 4 singles spots (1-0). The Santander, Spain native has the third-highest win percentage in the Big Sky at .818.
Francisco Bascon and
Alejandro Salvador Civera also rank in the top-10 with a .727, and .667, win percentage, respectively.
Last week against Montana and Montana State, Casino and Bascon earned wins in both of their singles matches while also earning two doubles wins as partners in the No. 1 spot.
Bascon boasts an 8-2 singles record on the season from the No. 1 spot and has been named the Big Sky Player of the Week three times. He most recently earned the award this week after going 2-0 at No.1 doubles and 2-0 at No. 1 singles.
Casino and
Althaf Dhaifullah lead the Vandals in doubles wins, compiling a 5-3 overall record in No. 2 doubles. Bascon and his partner
Matteo Masala are 3-5 on the season from the No. 1 spot.
As of late the duo of Casino and Bascon has been impressive winning three consecutive doubles matches and are 3-0 on the season.
Portland State is 7-8 overall on the season while standing at 3-0 in league play. The Vikings have dropped their past three matches, most recently falling to Boise State 0-5.
The squad last faced a Big Sky opponent on Mar. 21, defeating Montana 6-1.
