EUGENE, Ore. – Zack Short garnered First Team All-American honors in the shot put after finishing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships on Wednesday evening with a mark of 19.71m.
"I couldn't be prouder and more excited for Zack and also for Brett [Olsen]. He had a tremendous year and the two of them worked great together during a tough year with not ideal conditions," said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country,
Tim Cawley. "It was a highly competitive year and to come out and score points at the NCAA Championships is never easy so I'm really happy with how he performed. It was a great way to end the year for the Vandals!"
Short tied his personal best mark in his second throw of the competition. His heave of 19.71m/64'8" was the fifth best distance in the first three rounds, moving the senior on to the finals. Unable to improve on that mark in the final three throws, Short finished in sixth place to earn First Team honors. That distance, which Short also threw at the West Region Preliminaries, is a new outdoor Big Sky record.
Turner Washington of Arizona State won the event with a mark of 21.10m/69'2.75", while Texas' Adrian Piperi was second and Jordan Geist of Arizona took third.
Short finishes his career at Idaho as a two time All-American after earning Second Team accolades during the 2019 indoor season. He won five Big Sky Championships, with two coming in the outdoor shot put event. He also now owns both the Big Sky Outdoor and Indoor records.
