Men's Tennis Q&A: Mario Duron Garza

Hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, Mario Duron Garza joins the Vandals after spending last season at Virginia Commonwealth. His true freshman season at VCU was full of individual and team highlights that included, helping the Rams to an Atlantic 10 Championship and achieving an ITA ranking of 44th in the country. Garza also captured an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor (3/24) and went on to finish 2-0 in singles play and 8-4 in doubles after his first collegiate season. Garza is majoring in business finance at Idaho and hopes to one day open his own business after college. 

Where are you from and what do you like best about your hometown?
I am from Monterrey, Mexico and the thing I like most about my hometown is the weather and the people are really kind. 

What drew you to Idaho?
Coach Hangstefer and I really liked the team. Their goals are very similar to mine. 

What is your favorite memory playing tennis?
When I was 14 years old I qualified for the World Junior Champions League in Prostějov.

What is the hardest thing about tennis? 
The most difficult part about tennis is keeping the right mentality to not get frustrated. 

Do you have any personal goals for this upcoming season?
To get ranked in the IT rankings and try to make the NCAA tournament. I also want to win the Big Sky as a team. 

If you could have dinner with anyone from any era, who would it be and why?
Roger Federer because he is my favorite player. 

If you had the chance to watch one past sporting event, which one would you go to? 
Last year's US Open

Roger Federer

What is your best childhood memory?
When I was 12 years old I qualified to play for my state. It was one of the biggest moments of my life. They called my dad and told him that I had been chosen to represent the state.

Money Heist

What's your favorite song from your favorite artist? 
One of One - 42 Dugg

What is a movie that you can watch over and over again?
We Are Your Friends with Zac Efron

What is the best advice your parents ever gave you? 
Doesn't matter if you win or lose, you just need to always give your best. 

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I would love to learn how to speak many languages.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Sacrifice, Faith, and Hope

What chore do you absolutely hate doing? 
I hate washing the dishes

What is your favorite road trip destination?
New York City

What is one place you really want to visit? 
Singapore

If you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be? 
Madison Beer

What is one thing most people don't know about you? 
One thing they don't know about me is all the things that I have been through. Like the hard moments with my family and the sacrifices. I have had to sacrifice a lot to get here.
