FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona scored a goal in the final seconds of the first half and held on to beat Idaho 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Flagstaff.
NAU racked up 13 shots in the first half, but Idaho held firm until the final seconds. Maddie Shafer launched a ball which careened off of the cross bar and hit just crossed the line to score before bouncing back out and into the field of play. It wasn't initially called a goal, but the side judge called the goal as the teams prepared to go to half.
The Vandals tallied six shots in the second half, including two on-goal, but couldn't get the ball across the line.
The loss is only the second of the year for Idaho and the goal broke up a 10-game shutout streak for the Vandals. Idaho is now 9-2-2 on the year and 4-1 in Big Sky play.
Idaho returns home for its final three regular-season games with two next week, beginning with a Friday evening match up against Portland State who took over the top spot in the Big Sky standing with a weekend sweep of Idaho State and Weber State.
