Vandal Soccer Meets NAU in Big Sky Final

GREELEY, Colo. - Championship Sunday for Idaho and Northern Arizona. The seeds hold in the semifinals of the Big Sky Championship as the No. 2 Vandals take down Montana 1-0 and NAU advances on a shootout against Weber after earning a 1-1 draw. The Lumberjacks topped Idaho 1-0 during the regular season as part of their seven-game win streak to close the regular-season.

ABOUT IDAHO: Margo Schoesler scored her third game-winner and second against Montana this season as Idaho took down Montana in overtime. Kira Witte broke the Big Sky record with her 12 shutout of the season. The Vandals went 5-1-2 in non-conference play before going 6-2 in Big Sky action to earn the second seed. The Idaho defense has been key so far this year. Kira Witte has been stellar in her freshman year with 12 shutouts. Maddy Lasher and Savannah Foster lead Idaho with four goals and Alyssa Peters has a team-high five assists.

NAU: NAU earned a 1-1 draw against Weber State, but won the shootout 4-2 to advance to the championship. Josie Novak scored a goal to put NAU up 1-0 in the 46th minute, but Weber State equalized in the 82nd minute. NAU had 18 shots, including 10 on frame, but goalkeeper Trinity Corcoran had 10 saves and tipped a ball in the shootout to help NAU advance. Corcoran has found a groove over the last six weeks. He has allowed just two goals since the start of October and the Lumberjacks haven't lost in that stretch.

OUTSTANDING GOALKEEPING: Kira Witte is tied for the top spot in all of Division I with 12 shutouts this season. Witte, had 10-match shutout streak during the season which set the Idaho and Big Sky shutout streak record. She set the single-season Idaho shutout record already and has climbed to a tie for third on the career shutout mark in just 13 career games. She broke the Big Sky single-season shutout record Friday with the shutout against Montana. She had a career-best 12 saves against Weber State.

DEFENSE: While Witte has been stellar in her first 17 games as a Vandal, the Idaho back line and midfielders have also been outstanding. Idaho has allowed the fewest goals in the season of any Big Sky team, but the Vandals are just seventh for saves, meaning that the defense has limited scoring chances of other teams.

BIG SKY ALL-CONFERENCE: Kira Witte led the way for the Vandals, she earned Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year as well as earned first-team honors. Witte was joined on the first team by defender Cassidy Elicker and midfielder Savannah Foster. Defender Alyssa Peters and midfielders Margo Schoesler and Jayd Sprague were named to the second team. Defender Rebekah Reyes and forward Maddy Lasher received honorable mention honors.

BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: The Vandals are 2-4-1 in Big Sky Championship play since returning to the Big Sky in 2014. The Vandals advanced to the 2014 championship and the game ended in  a shootout where Northern Colorado advanced 3-0. The Vandals have played NAU in the tournament once, falling 1-0 in the spring of 2021.
