MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho Women's Golf and head coach, Stephanie Young announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The class includes Zoe Newell from Oro Valley, Arizona and Emma Kang from Torrance, California.
"We are thrilled to officially announce the signing of Emma and Zoe," Young said. "It is exciting to have them join Vandal Athletics and the University of Idaho. They are outstanding young women who are driven to excel in both academics and athletics. Both are passionate about continuing their careers at Idaho and being part of the Vandal women's golf program. Zoe and Emma will be a great addition to our team and we cannot wait to welcome them to Moscow in the fall."
Kang attends South Torrance High School and is a two-time Bay League Player of the Year and three time First Team All-Area and team captain. She is no stranger to success on the golf course as she earned back-to-back wins this fall at the FCG Collegiate Series Las Vegas Open (72-67) and shooting -8 at the FCG Collegiate Series in Palm Springs (66-70).
Some of Kang's other top performing highlights include a Runner Up finish at SCPGA Toyota Tour Cup Olivia Links shooting 67-74 (-3), fifth place at the AJGA Junior Open/The Bridges with 72-78-70 (+4), and finishing fourth at the SCPGA Players Tour/ The Vineyard at Escondido with 70-69 (-1).
Kang holds a 4.3 cumulative weighted gpa and has academic interests in nursing and law. She is the daughter of Tommy and Ji Kang and has an older brother, Ryan Kang.
Newell joins the Vandals from Ironwood Ridge High School where she led her team to win three state championships in four appearances at the Arizona State D2 Championships, while individually finishing in the top 10 all four years (2nd place in 2020).
Newell helped two of those teams to third and sixth-place finishes at the National High School Golf Invitational at Pinehurst in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Newell was also part of the Arizona State team that had third place finishes at both the 2021 Mary Cave Cup and the 2022 Girls Junior America Cup team, while individually earning top 10's in both events.
Newell's impressive junior career can also be seen in her coast-to-coast success in American Junior Golf Association tournaments with eighteen top-10's and ten top-5's including a 2nd-place at the 2021 Colorado Springs Junior. She was also the Champion at the 2021 Arizona Junior Stroke Play Championship.
Newell holds a 4.0 cumulative weighted gpa and has academic interests in business and professional golf management. She is the daughter of David and Amy Newell and has a younger sister, Lucy.
