YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Idaho volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Youngstown Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, falling in three sets to Youngstown State and Valpo.
"We lost our way organizationally, that led to the number of unforced errors," Idaho head coach
Chris Gonzalez said following the match against YSU.
Freshman
Taryn Vrieling posted double-digit kills in her collegiate debut against YSU with 13, while
Delaney Nicoll led Idaho with 10 kills in game two against Valpo. Â
The Vandals dropped their opener to Youngstown State, 25-14, 25-22, 25-17 in their first match of the day on Friday at Beeghly Center. Idaho was unable to find their stride in match two against Valpo, as the Crusaders won 25-16, 25-19, 25-15.
Vrieling hit .321, averaged 4.33 kills per set, and was Idaho's top blocker with two solo blocks against the Penguins. Libero
Aine Doty held it down on the defensive end as well, totaling double-digit digs in both matches - 16 versus YSU and 13 against Valpo. Attacker
Olivia Gloeckner provided a spark in the rotation with six kills and hit .313 versus the Crusaders.
Â
Idaho had nine service errors and hit .156 in its first match against YSU, while the Penguins hit .363.
The Vandals issued 27 kills to Valpo's 47 in match two and posted a .119 hitting percentage to the Crusaders' .317.
"We had difficulty applying pressure with the serve, because of this, Valparaiso was able to side-out with high efficiency," Gonzalez stated. "We improved from the first match, but we're not as sharp as we needed to be against a good team.
Idaho will look for their first win of the season tomorrow when they take on Delaware State at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. Fans can watch the action on Youngstown State's YouTube Channel or by clicking
