Road Trip Continues at UniWyo Invite

MOSCOW, Idaho – The fourth week on the road is taking Idaho volleyball to Laramie to compete in its final non-conference tournament of the season at the UniWyo Invite on Friday and Saturday, hosted by the Wyoming Cowgirls.

ABOUT IDAHO
  • Idaho went 0-3 last weekend at the Dolphin Invitational, falling in three sets to Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville and Tarleton State.
  • Freshman outside hitter Taryn Vrieling leads the Vandals in points per set (3.13) and total kills (74) to start the season. She has also tallied four games of double-digit kills to begin her career as a Vandal.
  • Setters Kate Doorn and Hailey Pelton have split time to start the season, accumulating 123 and 115 assists, respectively. Pelton's 5.23 assists per set is leading the team. With 45 assists against Delaware State earlier in the year, she helped the Vandals record 66 kills - the most by an Idaho volleyball team in a single match since 2019. 
  • A couple of Vandals have been impressive on the defensive end. Freshman Madison Wilson is the team's block leader with 25. She showed out in a match against Tarleton State last weekend, posting a personal best of 10 total blocks. At libero, Colorado Springs native Aine Doty has started each match and led Idaho in digs with 100. Her 3.45 digs per set is ranked sixth best in the league. 
  • As a team, Idaho ranks seventh in the Big Sky in service aces with 44. 

ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE
  • Idaho will face Morehead State for the first time in program history on Friday. 
  • The Eagles carry a 3-5 mark into this weekend's UniWyo Invite with three sweeps to their credit. Most recently, MSU went 1-2 at the Comfort Inn-Vitational, picking up a three-set win over Quinnipiac and losses to Robert Morris and North Alabama.
  • Senior Bridget Bessler leads Morehead State as one of the top setters in the Ohio Valley Conference. An 11-time OVC Setter of the Week, Bessler moved up to fifth place in career assists with 3,173 at Morehead State and has totaled 266 in the 2022 campaign. Outside hitter Abby Hulsman is MSU's leading attacker with 88 kills and 3.38 per set so far. She was named All-Tournament for the Comfort Inn-Vitational after averaging 4.0 kills per set over three matches. 

ABOUT WYOMING
  • The Vandals will meet Wyoming for the second time in 13 days. The Cowgirls were victorious in the first meeting of the season, winning in three sets at the GCU Classic. 
  • Wyoming is 2-7 to start the season and coming off last weekend where they went 1-2 with a win over Davidson and two losses to Delaware (0-3) and Winthrop (1-3). 
  • Entering the weekend, Corin Carruth paces the Wyoming offense with 102 kills on a .254 hitting percentage. Setter Kasia Partyka has totaled 298 assists and currently ranks sixth in the Mountain West in assists per set, averaging 8.51. Kayla Mazzocca is the Cowgirls leading blocker, totaling 30 on the season.  
 
ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE
  • Idaho and Nicholls State clash for the first time in the two schools' history Saturday. 
  • The Colonels sit 3-6 with two sweeps over Southern and a five-set victory over Central Michigan. 
  • Nicholls offense is led by four attackers that have recorded at least 60 kills so far, including Devon Bright who anchors the offense with 94 kills on the season. The Colonels split time at setter between Lilly Bivens and Kendall Battistella, who have recorded 172 and 138 assists, respectively. 
  • The defense is led by libero Kadie Becnel, who has totaled 130 digs for the Red and Gray. Four Colonels have posted double-digit blocks, with S'mara Riley leading the way with 36.

UP NEXT: The Vandals make a return to Memorial Gym for the first time in 2022 when the squad opens conference play against Sacramento State, Thursday, Sept. 22. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
