USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Freshman Valentina Rodas clinched a singles championship in her first collegiate tournament, as the Idaho women's tennis team wrapped up four days of competition at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains this weekend.
"I am very proud of the team, how we fought and how we became one unit throughout this tournament," Idaho head coach
Sanne Louwers said. "The competition pool was very strong and we hung in there and battled with some of the best players within the region. The highlight was freshman Valentina Rodas who won her draw in her first-ever college tournament. We had our ups and downs, we learned a lot and are ready to get back to work and win more fall tournaments."
Rodas was one of five student-athletes to clinch a singles title at the tournament, going 4-0 in the Charlie Singles Draw. She defeated Colorado State's Luana Avelar 7-7 (3), 7-6 (0) to take home first place.
Newcomer
Selin Sepken was another bright spot for the Vandals in both the Delta Singles Draw and the Charlie Doubles flight, picking up two wins in each bracket. Sepken, a transfer from Long Island University, won the back draw championship after recording a 6-3, 2-6, 10-1 win over Arianna Van Houweling of Air Force.

In doubles,
Rachelle Starreveld and Rodas won their first two matches in the Bravo flight before falling in the semifinals to Weber State, 8-5. The pair picked up an opening round victory against New Mexico State, 8-7 before clinching another win over Denver in the quarterfinals, 8-5.
Up next, the Vandals head to Boise for a three-day tournament at the Barb Chandler Classic, Sept. 23-25.
