BOISE, Idaho - Francisco Gay and
Taiyo Kurata each earned top 3 finishes in singles action, while the Idaho men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the General Patton Invite in Boise.
Gay put together a strong weekend in singles with a 3-1 record and runner-up finish to lead Idaho. The Argentinian native posted wins over Caden Kammerer (Eastern Washington), Redd Owen (BYU) and Kurata (Idaho) before falling to All-Mountain West Singles honoree and Utah State standout Bodin Zarkovic in the finals. Gay didn't go down without challenging Zarkovic, as he fell in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.Â
Despite losing to his teammate in the semifinals, Kurata recorded a 3-1 mark and third-place finish. He opened singles action with a round of 16 win over Portland State's Hubert Theriault and a quarterfinal victory over Andras Necz of Montana State to move on to the semifinals. After falling to Gay in the final four, Kurata delivered in a three-set thriller over Boise State's Jan Lucca Marquardt. Kurata won in tiebreak fashion by a 10-8 result.Â
Doubles pair
Alex Asenov and Gay stood out in doubles play, earning a trip to the semifinals. The duo beat competitors from Eastern Washington and Portland State before falling to the tournament champions from Boise State.Â
The doubles consolation bracket saw Idaho duo
Mario Duron and
Sebastian Medica make a run to the finals with wins over EWU and PSU. A 6-4 loss to EWU's Drew Dillon and Erik Sarlvik rounded out tournament play for the pair. Â

Asenov also found success in singles with a 4-1 weekend.
Up next, Idaho turns its attention to the Gonzaga Invitational for a three-day tournament, Nov. 3-5 in Spokane, Washington to round out their fall schedule.Â
